The Los Angeles Convention Center is Poised for Expansion

Category Business News

The Los Angeles Convention Center is poised for a transformative $2.2 billion expansion, aiming to solidify the city's status as a premier global destination for large-scale events. The Los Angeles City Council has approved an additional $27.7 million for design and engineering work, moving the project forward with a public-private partnership involving AEG and the Plenary Group. The expansion plans include adding 190,000 square feet of exhibit space, 55,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and 95,000 square feet of multipurpose space, effectively increasing the center's footprint to over 1 million square feet. This modernization is expected to double the facility's revenue and enhance its competitiveness against other major convention centers nationwide.

Construction is slated to begin in September 2025, with a planned pause during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, during which the Convention Center will serve as a venue for several events. Work will resume post-Games, aiming for completion by March 2029. Beyond boosting the local economy through increased tourism and event hosting, the project is anticipated to create approximately 7,445 construction jobs and 2,147 ongoing positions. The expansion also includes a redesign of Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, introducing new public open spaces and enhancing the downtown Los Angeles landscape.
